Our Story
Acadia Animal Medical Center began in 1985 with a simple idea from Dr. James “Jim” Rumore Sr. He wanted to build a place where animals received excellent care and where people felt comfortable bringing the pets that meant so much to them. He wanted something steady, reliable, and welcoming. He wants a clinic rooted in the same community he raised his family in.
Anyone who knew Dr. Rumore knew he had a gift for connecting with people and an even bigger heart for animals. It was not unusual for school buses to stop at his farm so children could see the animals he cared for. Camels, llamas, antelope, and other different pets wandered the property, but the stars were Ozzie and Harriet, his beloved dromedary camels. Children often arrived with vanilla wafers and carrots in hand because Dr. Jim told them exactly what treats the camels loved most. Those moments became memories for families in Acadiana, reflecting kindness, curiosity, and genuine joy in caring for animals.
Over the years, our clinic grew as the community did. Families in the Acadiana region began trusting us with their pets, and many of those families still walk through our doors today. Some of our clients were once those same children feeding Ozzie and Harriet on the farm. That sense of continuity is something we deeply care about.
Today, Acadia Animal Medical Center continues under the guidance of Dr. Rumore’s wife and his son, Dr. Chris, serving as the lead veterinarian. Together with our long-standing staff, they carry forward the same values that built this place: compassion, honesty, practical expertise, and a sincere commitment to the people and animals of Acadiana. We have expanded our services, updated our equipment, and grown our team, but the heart of the clinic remains unchanged.
Every pet who comes through our doors is treated with the same patience and respect that Dr. Jim showed years ago. Whether someone brings in their first puppy, a senior pet who needs a little extra support, or a working animal that is part of daily life, we approach each visit with steady, familiar care.
